First, let me indulge in a moment of shameless self promotion- here is a link to my new blog (launched Jan 15th 2010) and I would like it if you subscribe to it. http://steveburgess.blogspot.com

Second, we (my wife Dawn, my daughter Sacha and I) are very much looking forward to the Awakening conference in a couple of weeks time. Make every effort to get every young adult that you know there; it is bound to be an edifying time.

Hopefully, you will find the following thoughts edifying as well.

1 Peter 2:1-3- Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

Here’s how Peter sees this salvation working.
When you were born, you inherited a sinful nature; everybody that is born is born of perishable seed.
When we taste and see that the Lord is good and respond to His goodness by surrendering to His Lordship, through Jesus and by His living and enduring word, we are born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable seed.
His immortality clothes our mortality and we have new life.
This is salvation.

Peter than instructs those that have been saved by His goodness and grace to now ‘grow up in your salvation’.
All of you will know that there is a difference between ‘growing older’ and ‘growing up’. You don’t necessarily grow up as you grow older.
In the same way, there is a difference between ‘growing older’ in your new life and ‘growing up’ in your new life- and, tragically, people don’t necessarily grow up in their salvation as the years since their salvation increase.
This is what Peter teaches- since you’ve been gifted salvation and since you have been gifted new life, now grow up in your salvation; grow up in your new life.
And the evidence of your ongoing growth in your salvation is the ongoing riddance of your sin.

All of us get that, I presume. All of us get that we shouldn’t sin. But the important question is this- how? How do we rid our lives of sin?

Let me attempt an analogy.

I love steak. I have always loved steak. When I was a child, we used to have steak once a week- it was my favourite night of the week.
My dad used to buy ‘tenderised’ steaks (I’m not sure what you call these in Australia). Tenderised steak is basically the toughest cut of meat that can be found, which has been hammered into submission by being backed over repeatedly with a lorry in an attempt to make it what it is naturally not- tender.
My dad used to get these steaks and he’d cook them at a low heat for about half an hour, just to ensure that there was not a trace of flavour.
To a steak lover, a well-done tenderised steak is an abominable sin- but we loved it. We craved it. We didn’t know any better.

When I was 13, I got a part time job at a steak house. This was my moment of steak salvation. I tasted and I saw that a medium-rare sirloin was good. The steak cravings of my heart changed. I said good riddance to the well-done tenderised steak that I previously had craved- not because I wasn’t allowed it, but because I no longer wanted it. I had tasted something better.

Every once in a while, when I stand and compare prices at the meat section of the supermarket, I find myself being tempted to return to the sinful ways of well-done Tenderised steak that I inherited from my father, even if just for a moment. In that moment, what I need to do is remember the times that I have tasted the goodness of a well-seasoned, well-cooked, medium rare Sirloin steak and this remembrance stirs me to crave and long for that goodness and shun the Tenderised steak of my former ignorance.

That’s the way that it is with us and sin.
We don’t rid our lives of sin by trying harder; doing better; feeling guiltier; getting on that treadmill of works and religious effort- that’s like backing over your humanity in a lorry repeatedly to try to make it something that it is not- righteous. We rid our lives of sin by the ongoing process of tasting that the Lord is good and gracious and we then crave the goodness that we have tasted, instead of craving the desires of our sinful nature.

God wants to give you a new heart and a new mind, which bring a hunger and a thirst for His righteousness. That is the work of His spirit and His word in us- that we would desire Him.
And the more that we taste that the Lord is good by His living and active word, the more we will develop a craving, not for the perishable, empty way of life that we are to abandon, but for the imperishable, abundant life of Christ which we are to embrace.
Through His word and by His spirit, we taste the goodness of the Lord; and, having tasted his goodness, we crave for more; and we will wilfully abandon ‘malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, slander and sin of every kind’ in pursuit of his goodness- that’s maturity.

So, young adult, grow up in your salvation.

See you soon,

Steve

We all have busy times in our lives. Times where you think if only i could just have a break , rest and get some energy back.
Its usually at those times we dip into the fridge at the service station and retrieve the old faithful can of glory, a Red bull (you know you have).

We’ve all been there, can i get an amen!? But the truth is God wants to give you the energy you need to do what he has called you to do, and not just enough, more than enough.

Colossians 1:29
“To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me.”

Paul, one of the busiest people in the bible, didn’t struggle with a lack of energy, he struggled to contain the huge amount of energy God had given him.

God is a good God, he is so good that he doesn’t just give you the work of the gospel, he gives you the energy to do it and then some!

How do you get this heavenly red bull energy?

Simple, stay connected to the source, to the power point. Jesus is the life & energy giver. Your time in His Word will fill you and your time in his presence will empower you. If you find yourself getting tired, you’ve drifted into your own strength. Keep connected and you will find yourself like Paul struggling with too much energy!

I want to encourage you to stand on this word. God has the energy for you so that you can do what He has called you to do.

You’re going to fill the Stadiums of your city! Look forward to seeing you at Awakening 2010

Keep powering!

Bless ya,

James “Muzza” Murray

I’ll be real with you; blogging for Awakening isn’t easy for me. The feeling of inadequacy crept up a number of times as I attempted to write this.

I had an idea of what God put on my heart to share, but the journey of doing something new is a bit like dancing for the first time; learning to trust my dance partner – Jesus – and following his lead. I don’t always feel like I’ve got what it takes. But regardless of how I feel, He waits for me to take each step with Him.

Sometimes when the journey gets difficult, kind of like tripping up during a smooth waltz, I’m inclined to sit down and just sulk. That’s when my flesh screams against doing what’s right, and I start to think, “It’s not fair! I’m hurting! Why should I do what He asks me to?”

But why shouldn’t I?

I’m one of those people who would go to great lengths to ‘do something’ about a cause if the vision gets me passionate. But emotion doesn’t necessarily precede action; in other words, you don’t always have to feel to do–especially when love becomes part of the equation. Does God ever have a day where He doesn’t ‘feel like it’ and denies us of His love? How could I then, having received His unconditional love, choose to withhold it based on my emotions?

I already hear you asking, what’s love got to do with any of this? Well, put simply, it’s the love of God awakened in us all that will drive us to live for our fellow man–-to see justice done for the least of God’s creation. And we will never have to wait to feel the rush of being called to a cause. We will simply act because His love compels us to.

Although injustice currently appears to have the upper hand, justice and righteousness will nevertheless prevail. God echoes this promise throughout His Word:

And He will judge the world in righteousness (rightness and equity); He will minister justice to the peoples in uprightness. (Psalm 9:8, AMP)

It takes acts of justice to bring about righteousness in this world. God is and will be the divine minister of justice, the one that brings us towards a world of righteousness. But as He works, we can also be part of making it happen–-we can be ministers of His justice.

The leaders of C3 have a vision for Awakening to be just that. It involves partnering with local and international ministries so that the Body of Christ can reveal God’s heart for creation in a tangible way. As a ministry that releases children from poverty in Jesus’ name, Compassion has been chosen to be the international ministry partner. Since 1951 Compassion has assisted children born into poverty and nurtured them in all areas of their development. Compassion’s holistic child development has restored the dignity of children and helped them break free from the vicious cycle of poverty through the love of God, not just in their own lives, but in the lives of their family and wider community.

You’ll get to learn more about Compassion’s Child Sponsorship Program at Awakening, but in the mean time I’ll say this much: partnering with Compassion allows you and me as individuals to bring justice to the ends of the earth.

However you are called to challenge injustice for the long-term, whether it’s through a ministry like Compassion or your own personal calling, don’t forget that you also have an opportunity to do something about it on a daily basis; be it by saying a kind word, making a fair decision, lending a loving hand, or even blessing your enemies. Don’t wait to feel. Just act.

I find it fascinating that our Lord Himself is a lover of righteousness and justice. It’s His desire for us really, to show His love for all of Creation:

The LORD loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love. (Psalm 33:5, NIV)

There are so many people hurting and going through what seems like the toughest day of their life, with no one to fight for them. Whatever valley they are in, I pray that because of you, they may know of God’s unfailing love and his desire to see justice poured out in their lives.

I am awakened to the Fathers Love. My heart is whole, lacking nothing.
I am His son, called into an 'Agape' Love (the highest and purest form of love, one that surpasses all other types of affection).

God sent Jesus for more than just 'fire insurance' (saving us from hell), it was to reveal His heart towards us. John 17:23 '...and have loved them even as you have loved me.' The Father loves me as much as He loves Jesus?!! Are you serious?!! I struggled with this for 2 days, until finally giving it to God.

I accepted my place as a child of God. The world needs to know... 1 John 3:1 'How great is the Love the Father has lavished on us, that we shall be called children of God! And that is what we are!

The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.' The void can be filled! The brokenness replaced! The addiction broken! The wounds healed! No more searching! Here is the answer...JESUS. Lets live it out, and let the world know.

There’s warmth in the air. I can hear the wind. Strong winds are blowing from the North. I know what it means.

It’s not time to pack up the ashes and move to a new town like in Chocolat. It’s not time to be given a magic gingerbread man. But it is time to break camp and move on. We have stayed at this mountain long enough.

“The spirit of the Lord is like the wind you don’t know which way it will blow”, a wise man (JK) said (quoted from John 3:8). And the wind is coming from the North. It’s a new season. Spring is awakening. The warm winds that bring sunshine, wattle and jacaranda blue.

It’s time to break camp and move on.

When the Lord spoke to Moses he breathed like wind. “YHWH”: Yahweh, “I am who I am”. His name is like breath. Say it: “YHWH”. It’s breathy, it’s windy. It is who he is.

And he has breathed. He has breathed spring into being.

He has: “restored my joy

Gave me a brand new heart

Breathed on me again

Revived my lonely world.” (T. Tofa)

The Wind is like the Mistral of Provence. It clears away the fog from winter. It clears confusion, rain and snow. But it is not cold like the mistral, it is hot, like the winds of California. And when the wind blows, anything can happen.

This morning the warm winds woke me up, interrupted my cold nightmares. The wind breathed new life, a new morning, a new day. A chance to live in warmth and love, a chance to awaken.

In France there is a wind called the Mistral. K.A Walker writes: “Behind the Mistral is the beauty of Provence. Its fierceness blows away clouds and grime and doubt, leaving colours the depth of dreams and a freshness that can come only after the Mistral’s scouring. Provence needs the Mistral or it ceases to be the Provence of my dreams. I need the Mistral to cut through those dreams to truth – beauty comes after the wind.”

I can hear the wind. It sounds like wings flapping. It’s the sound of many waters, it’s the sound of tumult, the sound of an army. It’s the sound of the Almighty. Ezekiel 1:24

He breathes new life, a new season, spring.

Longfellow writes “It means youth, love, song and all that is beautiful in life." Flowers bloom, there is a spring in my step as I let my heart be awakened.

It’s time to break camp, and move on. We have stayed at this mountain long enough.

Will you step into this new day with me? Come, feel the wind on your back, let your hair blow in the wind. Open your eyes, spring is in the air. God breathes and we are awakening.
